DNSBOX is the full-featured, failover-ready DHCP server you’ve been looking for

User feedback has always rated the DNSBOX DHCP solution highly. With increasing need for stand-alone DHCP, in 2021 we set out to build indisputably the world's best DHCP server. Informed by expert customer insight, that's what we've done

Your choice of DHCP engines

Under the hood, DNSBOX gives you a choice between two DHCP engines: KEA or ISC DHCP.

Since it was launched over 20 years ago, Internet Systems Consortium's DHCP (also known as DHCPd) has been the industry standard open source DHCP software. It has formed the basis of DNSBOX's DHCP functionality for decades and, with the addition of other DNSBOX components, DHCPd continues to offer a highly stable, tried and tested foundation for a DHCP server.

ISC released DHCPd's eventual replacement, KEA, in 2014. Where its predecessor was designed for a IPv4 world, KEA is designed to handle both IPv4 and IPv6. It's been developed to better cater for an always-connected world with low tolerance for network disruption. Rather than holding DHCP data in a single file like DHCPd, KEA uses a relational database, making it particularly attractive if you:

  • need to make frequent configuration changes as the service does not need to restart to implement changes
  • need active/active failover

Others will prefer to stick with the mature DHCP. DNSBOX ships with DHCPd enabled by default and switching to KEA is straightforward. With an ApplianSys support contract, existing customers can be assisted through their migration to KEA. New customers can choose to deploy KEA from the outset.

In most cases, your DHCP requirement can be met with either engine. Talk to us about any specific functionality that you need and we’ll help you work out which is best for you.

Failover without the fuss

Without failover, DHCP can be a single point of failure on your network. If you have a single server and it becomes unavailable, clients will be unable to request or renew IP address leases. As your reliance on your network grows, this disruption to DHCP becomes less tolerable.

To achieve failover your options have been limited to:

  • a high-end DDI solution in a grid-like deployment, or
  • an open source solution with limitations and high Total Cost of Ownership

The most popular solution for DHCP – Windows Server – has historically been limited in its failover capabilities:

  • Active-Passive redundancy would introduce a storage Single Point of Failure
  • Active-Active would ensure that a DHCP service remained available in the event of one server failing, but was unable to provice IP Address Continuity
  • Recent updates are limited to IPv4 address spaces

Similarly, Cisco routers and ISC's DHCPd have limited failover functionality – implementation requires expert DHCP knowledge and complicated workarounds.

DNSBOX makes it easy to set up and deploy a failover unit for redundancy. DNSBOX200 failover pairs share configuration, ensuring that they never 'disagree' about the network. They also dynamically share available addresses, and information about current leases.

DNSBOX failover be set up in a few simple clicks with options to suit different network topologies and requirements.

Active-Active mode – the pool of available addresses is split between two active DHCP servers.

Active-Passive mode – achieved by clustering a pair of DHCP servers on a single virtual IP address. A passive server copies information about the leases distributed by the active server in real time.

With high availability seen as essential, DHCP failover is now a necessity that DNSBOX allows you to achieve simply and cost-effectively.

With our new failover capability, if one data centre is down we can still have service. It's all seamless.

DHCP slam dunk for Suns

Arizona's professional basketball team, the Phoenix Suns, chose DNSBOX to upgrade DHCP performance at its state-of-the-art event arena and facilities.

The arena in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, is also home to two other professional sports teams and hosts concerts and live events throughout the year. Internet access for the respective pro-sports staff, site staff, external media and entertainment groups needs to be delivered smoothly and without interruption.

Network Administrator Anthony Grande is responsible for ensuring secure access for as many as 8,000 simultaneous devices. He was already hosting countless third-party devices and VOIP demand via separate virtual LANs and VOIP sub-networks. With demand on the increase, Anthony would soon need to purchase additional Windows DHCP server client access licences so visitors to the busy arena could access the network. Any increase in licence volume was likely to come at significant cost, and only add to an already complicated system.

Anthony decided a dedicated replacement server would better expand DHCP capabilities and upgrade performance. He also hoped the new server administration would be easier to manage. And despite future plans for IPAM, he did not want to be forced to implement it immediately by purchasing a solution that depended on proprietary IPAM for DHCP to work.

DNSBOX's modular and highly flexible configuration matched his needs perfectly. With DNSBOX Anthony can add DNS or other DDI services as and when he needs them. There are also no extra fees for increasing client licences, so he can save the business even more money.

Impressed by a tour of the user interface, Anthony was delighted to learn he could administer both DHCP and VLAN setup from a single, easy to use browser display. "I've worked with a lot of DHCP appliances, this is by far the easiest I've ever dealt with," says Anthony. "I love the fact the UI is not nested, it's very easy to use, I'm not having to go six layers deep and then back myself up 2 layers to make sure it worked."

In choosing two DNSBOX 220's for the arena, Anthony has guaranteed the service uptime needed. Configured as a High Availability pair, they ensure that should an outage occur either appliance will deliver the continuity of service needed.

"In choosing a best-fit DNSBOX solution free from additional licensing costs, Phoenix Suns can now cost-effectively handle thousands of DHCP requests," says ApplianSys Business Development Director Dave Gravell.

Anthony is delighted. "It has been a pleasure working with this device and how resilient it is. I take a nightly backup and it just works," he says. "It's exactly what you hope for when you buy a box like this, and 80% of the time you don't get something like this. Excellent appliance!"

Migrating to cloud? Retain critical DHCP service on site

As internet connectivity becomes ubiquitous, companies are increasingly migrating IT infrastructure from physical servers to cloud-based solutions like AWS or Azure. This makes sense for most of the services in an organisation's data centre/server room, reducing complexity and costs with little difference in the services themselves.

But some infrastructure is too critical to migrate and leave at the mercy of a Single Point of Failure: the internet connection.

It's likely that you're using Windows Server for DHCP services and, with this solution available in Azure, cloud migration is often prompted by a Windows Server refreshment project. Moving Windows Server into the cloud leaves DHCP off-site at the mercy of your internet connection - if the connection is unavailable, so is your DNS. But it doesn't make sense to retain an on-site instance of Windows Server solely for DHCP.

DNSBOX offers a cost-effective alternative. You can retain on-site DHCP when migrating to MS Azure either:

  • Replacing all DHCP infrastructure so that Azure plays no role in DHCP whatsoever
  • Deploying DNSBOX as Relay Agents that integrate with Azure

And with DNSBOX's GSS-TSIG (Generic Security Service Algorithm for Secret Key Transaction) functionality you can achieve smooth integration with Azure Active Directory.

DNSBOX takes Somerset Care of DHCP

Somerset Care has around 50 sites across southern England, including care homes, respite centres and satellite offices, each with 20 devices. Routers at each site forward DHCP to a pair of Windows servers at the main office, hosting another 200 devices. However, a planned move to Azure cloud-based networking meant losing existing Windows server DHCP functionality. It would also magnify the impact of losing network service should connectivity fail.

IT Manager Peter Beale wanted to find a resilient solution that would deliver best value for his budget, ideally while helping to simplify the administration of his evolving network. Foreseeing the need to include IP address management(IPAM) in future, he also needed it be flexible enough to add it later without undue effort or cost.

After a demonstration of DNSBOX’s modular features and intuitive interface, Peter was hooked. Not only would it make DHCP and DNS administration straightforward and far easier to manage, he could seamlessly add IPAM as well when he needed it.

Peter could affordably purchase 2 DNSBOX200s and implement active-active failover across Somerset Care’s respective datacentre locations. Using a second appliance for redundancy will guarantee the uptime needed for his now cloud-based applications.

"Since ApplianSys successfully migrated his existing Windows DNS and DHCP config, Peter has been enjoying easier admin, safe in the knowledge his network is now more resilient," says Business Development Manager Dave Gravell. "He has been delighted by the value DNSBOX has provided in delivering each of his ideal specs at the right price."

Rapid, risk-free admin - the quickest, easiest DHCP server you'll ever deploy

Technicians cannot afford to spend time working around the limitations of basic DHCP solutions. They need a fully featured, dedicated server that makes common tasks simple and complex tasks, like Dynamic DNS, straightforward. To further reduce operating expense:

  • Troubleshooting must be efficient and automated wherever possible.
  • Server upgrades and software updates must be simple and undisruptive.

With DHCP the initial setup is usually the most time-consuming administrative task. DNSBOX's user interface is designed to be as simple as possible for day-to-day DHCP administration.

As a dedicated server, it is inherently quicker and easier to deploy DNSBOX for DHCP than implementing a complex DDI solution or using secondary DHCP functionality in other devices like NGFWs or Routers. And because our interface is designed solely for DHCP administration the functionality you need is always front and centre.

User feedback has always rated the DNSBOX DHCP solution highly. With increasing need for stand-alone DHCP, in 2021 we decided to re-build it from the ground up, to build indisputably the world's best DHCP server. Informed by expert customer insight every step of the way, that's what we've done.

  • We've developed templates and wizards for the most common use cases to make DNSBOX the quickest, easiest DHCP server you'll ever deploy.
  • Pared back navigation and dynamic workflows put the fields you need in-front of you, removing unnecessary clutter
  • Templating couldn't be easier, streamlining workflows and allowing junior administrators to safely make changes
  • You can easily edit subnets without worrying about config errors - inbuilt validation takes care of it all.
  • Help is built in to the user interface to guide you every step of the way.
  • Informative DHCP statistics give you full visibility of the service, allowing you to easily search for leases, hosts, zones and IP ranges.

We replaced a combination of physical and virtual DNS and DHCP servers and found fewer cases of human error after switching to the DNSBOX appliances, and better tracking of changes.
