CEFAS Enhances DHCP Reliability with DNSBOX
The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), a UK government agency, moved its network infrastructure to the cloud, decommissioning physical Microsoft Windows Servers. While DNS was migrated to Azure, the agency still required an on-site DHCP solution to manage IP assignments across multiple research sites.
Security and failover were key priorities. The existing Microsoft DHCP setup lacked redundancy, increasing the risk of service disruption. The IT team also needed to reduce administrative overhead, particularly when managing multiple locations.
To address this, CEFAS deployed two DNSBOX200 appliances configured as a high-availability pair. This ensured reliable, automated IP address assignment while introducing failover protection to maintain continuous service. Additionally, the appliances were licensed as recursive resolvers for secure DNS caching, delivering high performance and enhanced security as a separate service on the same platform.
With DNSBOX now in place, CEFAS has eliminated reliance on Windows DHCP, strengthened security and resilience, and streamlined network administration, all while seamlessly integrating with its cloud-based infrastructure.
